Television actor Zaher Alvi, also known as Md. Neyamat Ullah Bhuiyan, has been granted bail by the High Court in a case accusing him of abetting the suicide of his wife, Afra Ivnath Ikra.
The order clears the way for his release from prison.
The development was confirmed by court sources on Monday (3 August).
Earlier, on 2 August, a High Court bench comprising Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher made absolute a previously issued rule regarding his bail.
On 30 June, a Dhaka court ordered Zaheer Alvi to be sent to jail after he was produced before the court following a two-day remand in the case.
Police presented the actor before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka after completing the remand and sought to keep him in custody until the investigation was completed.
Following the hearing, Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaid ordered that he be sent to prison.
Earlier, on 18 June, Zaher Alvi surrendered before the court through his lawyer and sought bail. The court rejected the plea and ordered him to jail.
On 21 June, the investigating officer requested a seven-day remand for further investigation.
Following a hearing on 24 June, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Al Biruni Mir granted a two-day remand instead.
According to the case statement, Afra Ibnat Ikra was found hanging at the couple’s residence in Mirpur DOHS, Dhaka, on 28 February.
She was taken to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
The following day, Ikra’s father, Kabir Hayat Khan, filed a case with Pallabi Police Station, alleging that prolonged family disputes and mental abuse had driven his daughter to take her own life.
Zaher Alvi and Afra Ivnath Ikra were married in 2010 and have a son together.
