A 21-year-old youth named Rifat Khan was stabbed to death in broad daylight in the Pallabi area of Mirpur, Dhaka, on Monday afternoon.
His father, Sagar Khan, was also injured in the incident while attempting to save his son.
According to Sagar, Rifat had left home earlier in the day for Shewrapara. Later, Sagar received a phone call informing him that a group of 15 to 20 youths had intercepted his son near the old Pallabi police station.
When he rushed to the spot and questioned the group, they claimed there was a financial dispute. Moments later, two motorcycles arrived carrying several individuals, one of whom stabbed Rifat in the chest around 1:45pm on Road No. 9 of Block C in Mirpur-12.
When Sagar tried to intervene, he was also stabbed in the back. The attackers then fled the scene.
The critically injured Rifat was first taken to Islami Bank Hospital in the area and later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared him dead around 3:45pm.
Speaking from the hospital, Rifat’s father said their family hails from Uttar Saldar village in Naria upazila of Shariatpur district but currently resides in Mirpur-12. Rifat, previously employed at a garment factory, was unemployed at the time of his death. He was the eldest of two siblings.
“I don’t know what conflict my son had with them or why they would kill him like this,” Sagar said.
DMCH police camp in-charge Inspector Md Faruk confirmed the incident, saying Rifat’s body has been kept in the morgue for autopsy. His father received initial treatment at the hospital’s emergency department for a stab wound.
