A youth drowned in the Turag River on Thursday night while fleeing from a crowd after setting fire to a bus in Dhaka.
DMP identified the deceased as Saiyaf, 18.
The arrested youth is Rudro Mohammad Nahiyan Amir Sani, also 18.
According to police, several youths ignited an empty bus parked beside Sohel Engineering Workshop in Uttar Nababerbag under Shah Ali Police Station around 10pm and were recording a video of the act.
Locals noticed the fire and chased them, catching one of the perpetrators on the spot. Another jumped into the nearby Turag River while a third managed to escape.
A press release signed by Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s DC (Media and Public Relations) Muhammad Talebur Rahman said the youth who jumped into the river drowned as he could not swim.
Locals pulled him out in critical condition and took him to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
After receiving the information, police reached the scene quickly and took custody of the apprehended youth.
Police said efforts are underway to trace and arrest the remaining suspect, and legal proceedings against the detained individual are in progress.
