US President Donald Trump has accused Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday of conspiring alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un against the United States.
Trump’s remarks came on the day China hosted world leaders in Beijing for its largest-ever Victory Day parade in Beijing, marking the 80th anniversary of World War II’s end in the nation, which highlighted the country’s military power.
“Please give my warmest regards to Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un as you conspire against the United States of America,” Trump posted on his social media website, Truth Social.
Previously, Trump had dismissed concerns about the growing relations between China, Russia, and other nations, claiming that this alliance does not pose a threat to the US globally.
On social media, the US president also reminded his followers of the “massive amount of support and ‘blood'” the US had provided China during World War II, referring to the military display.
“Many Americans died in China’s quest for Victory and Glory. I hope that they are rightfully Honored and Remembered for their Bravery and Sacrifice!” he added.
The parade, attended by 26 heads of state, including Putin and Kim, was seen by some as a message to Western countries that have distanced themselves from these leaders. China, in light of Trump’s tariffs that have disrupted the global economic balance, has been positioning itself as a potential counterbalance to US influence.
Trump has defended his tariffs as necessary to safeguard US interests, suggesting he is willing to accept the diplomatic fallout.
When asked whether he believed China and its allies were forming a coalition to challenge the US, he responded, “No. Not at all. China needs us.” Trump further stated that he and his Chinese counterpart Xi share a “good relationship” but he maintains China requires the support of the US more than the opposite, reports the BBC.
While China has not criticised Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, it has been accused by Western nations of supporting Russia’s war efforts by supplying dual-use materials and purchasing Russian oil. These allegations, however, are denied by Beijing.
