Witness testimony in the murder trial of Abu Sayed, a student at Begum Rokeya University (BRU) in Rangpur who lost his life during the July Uprising, has been deferred due to the absence of witness.
The case, which involves charges of crimes against humanity, saw the indictment of 30 accused individuals on 6 August this year, when the International Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT-2) issued the order.
The formal trial of the case began on the same day under the leadership of Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury and a three-member bench.
Previously, on June 30, arrest warrants were issued for 26 accused individuals, including the former vice chancellor and proctor of BRU, in connection with the Abu Sayed murder case.
On 30 July, Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam submitted a plea for framing charges in the case, which was accepted by the ICT-2 on the same day.
Abu Sayed, a 12th batch student of the English Department at BRU, was shot on 16 July 2024, during the July Uprising at Park Mor in front of the university. He later succumbed to his injuries.
Known as one of the key coordinators of the quota reform movement, his death further fueled the protests, which later escalated into a mass uprising.
