More than three decades after ‘Home Alone’ cemented itself as a festive classic, the suburban Chicago property that starred alongside Macaulay Culkin continues to generate as much intrigue as the film’s booby traps. The Georgian-style house, used extensively for exterior shots in the 1990 blockbuster, has once again become a talking point following its latest change of ownership and a series of revelations from the people who have lived within its storied walls.
Located at 671 Lincoln Avenue in Winnetka, Illinois, the five-bedroom residence was thrust into the spotlight in 1990, becoming the battleground where Kevin McCallister outwitted the hapless Wet Bandits. Although much of the interior was recreated on a soundstage at a nearby high school, the real staircase, kitchen and basement all made it into the film, giving the house an enduring screen presence that fans can still recognise.
Former owner John Abendshien, who lived in the property during filming, has spoken candidly about the experience in recent years. He and his family received roughly 65,000 dollars for allowing the production to use the home, but the excitement of hosting a Hollywood crew was swiftly replaced by the shock of constant fan visits once Home Alone became a phenomenon. In interviews and in his memoir, he described their once quiet suburban life giving way to crowds gathering at the kerb and cameras pointing directly at the front door.
Despite this early turbulence, Abendshien eventually embraced the global fascination and regularly met fans curious about the home and the film’s legacy. He and his family stayed for more than 20 years before selling the property in 2012 for about $1.6 million.
Its next owners, Tim and Trisha Johnson, took a different approach. After acquiring the house, they oversaw a major renovation in 2018 that expanded the property to more than 9,000 square feet. They added a home cinema, sports court and modern kitchen, although they chose to preserve the iconic central staircase that Kevin famously sleds down.
The Johnsons placed the upgraded house on the market in 2024 for $5.25 million and it sold in less than a week. The sale was finalised in early 2025. The new owners have kept their identities private but, according to their agent, see themselves as guardians of a piece of film history and intend to maintain the property’s connection to the beloved Christmas classic.
Even Culkin himself briefly considered closing the loop. In late 2024, the actor revealed that he had contemplated buying the house when it went up for sale, joking that he had imagined turning it into a movie fun house complete with stair-sledding for visitors. Ultimately, he opted against it, saying parenthood and a packed schedule made the idea impractical.
More than 30 years after Home Alone first reached cinemas, the house remains a pilgrimage site for fans and a subject of continuing fascination for the film’s cast, its former residents and moviegoers around the world.
