Detective Branch of Police on Wednesday said they are actively working to arrest suspects involved in the robbery of Tk1.21 crore from a vehicle belonging to DL Filling Station in the capital’s Uttara area.
The petrol pump is owned by Tasin Akhtar Haque, cousin of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and youngest son of former minister Khurshid Jahan Haque, sister of former prime minister Khaleda Zia.
The robbery occurred between 10am and 10:30am on Sunday on the southern side of RAB‑1 Battalion headquarters while the money was being transported to a bank.
According to police and petrol pump sources, several unidentified individuals riding three motorcycles intercepted the vehicle carrying the cash.
The assailants rammed the vehicle, threatened the occupants with sharp weapons, snatched the bag containing the money, and fled.
Following the incident, Karim, manager of DL Filling Station, filed a case against unidentified persons.
Sources said the petrol pump handles daily transactions of Tk45–50 lakh, which are typically deposited between 10am and 10:30am. As banks remain closed on Fridays and Saturdays, cash from those two days is deposited on Sunday, resulting in a larger sum being transported.
Speaking at DMP Media Centre, DB Additional Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam said multiple teams are investigating various aspects of the heist.
“We are working on several leads and are optimistic that we will arrest the suspects very soon,” he said, adding that DB has solved almost all major incidents in Dhaka and expressed confidence this case would be no exception.
“We are hopeful we will solve this Tk1.21 crore heist and bring the perpetrators to justice,” the official said.
