A Dhaka WASA employee was run over and killed by an unidentified vehicle while working inside a manhole in Dhaka’s Mirpur area on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Md Shamim, 47, who had been working with Dhaka WASA for about 25 years. He was posted at Senpara water pump area in Mirpur. Shamim hailed from Paikhand Baradia village under Bera Upazila in Pabna.
According to Kafrul Police Station, the accident occurred around 6:30am in Senpara area of Mirpur-10.
Shamim had opened a manhole cover in the middle of the road and gone inside to work on a water line. At one point, as he raised his head out of the manhole, a vehicle ran over him. He sustained critical injuries and died on the spot.
Saiful Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kafrul Police Station, said that police rushed to the scene upon receiving the news and completed the necessary legal formalities. The vehicle involved in the accident has neither been identified nor seized yet.
“We are collecting and analysing CCTV footage from the surrounding area to identify the vehicle and its driver,” the OC said, adding that legal action would be taken against the person responsible once identified.
The body has been sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination.
