Housing and Public Works Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan on Friday called on voters to support the “Yes” vote in the upcoming referendum, describing it as vital to ensuring a fascism-free future for the country.
Speaking at a civic gathering at the Ethnic Minority Cultural Institute auditorium in Bandarban, Adilur said the nation now faces its most critical question, whether to change the country’s course or create opportunities for fascist forces to re-emerge.
He said the answer would be delivered through the 12 February election, when voters will cast two ballots.
One vote will elect public representatives for the next five years, while the other will determine a long-term national direction aimed at keeping the country free from fascism for the next century.
Urging voters to support the “Yes” option in the referendum, the adviser said such a decision would help fulfill the aspirations of those who lost their lives during the July-August movement.
The meeting was organised by the Bandarban District Administration as part of the referendum awareness campaign.
Local Government Secretary Md Rezaul Maksud Jahedi, Deputy Commissioner Shamim Ara Rini, and Superintendent of Police Abdur Rahman also addressed the gathering.
The local government adviser and the secretary arrived in Bandarban on Thursday night. On Friday morning, they paid floral tributes at the July Martyrs’ Memorial in the district headquarters. They later visited development projects, including a water treatment plant and municipal water supply line being implemented by the Department of Public Health Engineering, as well as the Sadar Upazila Parishad Complex constructed by the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED).
Officials from government and non-government organisations, teachers, and representatives of civil society were present at the events.
