In Tamil Nadu, where the Assembly election results have delivered a dramatic outcome, South Indian film star C. Joseph Vijay, popularly known as Thalapathy Vijay, has made a striking electoral debut, with his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam securing 107 seats.
Vijay himself won by large margins from Perambur and Tiruchirappalli (East), a result that has surprised many given that this was both the party’s first election and its first foray into electoral politics.
Much of the discussion around the victory has centred on Vijay’s widespread popularity. Long regarded as one of the leading figures in South Indian cinema and often seen as among the most influential stars after Rajinikanth, his appeal is widely believed to have translated into electoral capital.
However, observers point out that stardom alone does not fully explain the outcome. The party’s election manifesto also drew significant attention, particularly for its focus on women and young voters.
Among the proposals were a monthly allowance for women below 60 years of age, a limited number of free LPG cylinders annually, and financial assistance for the marriage of girls from economically disadvantaged families.
The manifesto also outlined plans in education and healthcare, including modern residential schools, interest-free loans for higher education, and family-based health insurance schemes, which reportedly resonated with voters.
Youth-focused measures formed another key plank of the campaign. Promises such as timely organisation of government examinations, unemployment allowances, job creation and skill development programmes are believed to have attracted a substantial section of younger voters.
In addition, proposals such as loan waivers for farmers and a firm stance against drug abuse contributed to strengthening the party’s political messaging.
Vijay’s rise appears to reflect more than celebrity appeal alone. Analysts suggest it is the result of a combination of targeted policy promises, a focus on specific voter groups, and a carefully cultivated public image.
The central question now is how far these commitments will be realised in practice.
