Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Chandrasekar Joseph Vijay is set to be sworn in as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday, bringing an end to days of uncertainty over government formation in the state following the Assembly election results announced on Monday.
Vijay will take oath at 10am at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai, paving the way for Tamil Nadu’s first government in nearly six decades that is neither led by the DMK nor the AIADMK, reports NDTV.
He took five days, held four meetings with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar and engaged in prolonged negotiations with potential allies to secure the magic figure of 118 seats in the 234-member Assembly.
The 51-year-old actor-turned-politician, whose party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam won 108 seats in last month’s election, met the governor on Saturday and claimed the support of five MLAs from the Indian National Congress, two lawmakers from the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and two legislators each from the Communist Party of India (CPI), the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M), and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).
As Vijay was elected from two constituencies and will have to vacate one seat, the alliance’s effective strength stands at 120 MLAs.
