A 17-year-old aspiring cricketer, Aditi Moreshwar Chaukande, has reportedly died by suicide in Nagpur after failing to secure a place in a regional cricket association team, officials confirmed on Thursday.
The teenager had been training rigorously for two years with the ambition of joining the prestigious Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) team, reports NDTV.
Originally from Akola, Maharashtra, Aditi had moved to Nagpur with her mother and was residing in Laxmi Nagar area to pursue her sporting career.
She had been honing her skills at Surve Cricket Academy in the hope of playing at a higher level through a BCCI-affiliated academy. Her brother is also a cricketer.
Investigating officers from Bajaj Nagar Police Station recovered an alleged suicide note at the scene in which the victim detailed her mental anguish.
In the note, Aditi allegedly wrote, “I wasn’t selected,” highlighting the immense pressure and severe mental stress she experienced after being unable to achieve her professional goals.
Inspector Chetan Chauhan said the police are currently investigating the matter from all possible angles. The victim’s body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and officials noted that the exact cause of death can only be confirmed once the report is received.
