A Union Parishad (UP) member was hacked to death by unidentified assailants while returning home from a local market in Kalia upazila of Narail on Thursday night.
The victim Moni Mia Sheikh (45) was a member of ward No 1 of Jaynagar Union and a resident of Char Jaynagar village.
According to police and local sources, Moni Mia was returning home from Putimari market around 11:30 pm when a group of miscreants attacked him with domestic weapons in Panipara village and fled, leaving him critically injured.
Locals took him to Kalia Upazila Health Complex, where doctors referred him to Dhaka for advanced treatment. He died on the way.
Naragati Police Station officer in charge Abdur Rahim said the body is being sent for an autopsy. Additional police force have been deployed in the area and operations are underway to arrest those involved.
