UN Secretary-General António Guterres has reaffirmed the United Nations’ steadfast support and solidarity with Bangladesh during a meeting with Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman at UN Headquarters on Thursday.
Guterres extended warm congratulations to the country’s newly formed government and praised Bangladesh for its ongoing humanitarian leadership, particularly in providing shelter to forcibly displaced Rohingya people.
The discussion also covered pressing global issues, including the challenges faced by developing and vulnerable nations amid the ongoing global oil crisis. Both sides emphasised their commitment to deepening cooperation between Bangladesh and the United Nations in tackling global challenges and advancing sustainable development.
Dr Rahman underscored how the crisis disproportionately affects poorer nations. He also conveyed an invitation, on behalf of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, for Guterres to visit Bangladesh at a mutually convenient time.
The UN chief welcomed the invitation and expressed his appreciation.
