The government has relieved three of the University Grants Commission’s five full-time members of their duties and appointed three new members to the regulatory body.
The Secondary and Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education announced the changes through two separate notifications issued on Sunday. Both were signed by Senior Assistant Secretary Naima Khandaker.
The relieved members are Professor Mohammad Anwar Hossain of the Department of Sociology at the University of Dhaka, Professor Md Saidur Rahman of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, and Professor Mohammad Ayub Islam of the Department of Accounting at the University of Chittagong.
The notification said they had been relieved in the public interest with the approval of the appropriate authorities.
In a separate notification, the government appointed Professor Md Mehedi Khan of the Department of Population Sciences at the University of Dhaka, Professor Md Aslam Hossain of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the same university, and Professor Niaz Ahmed Chowdhury of the Department of Vascular Surgery at Bangladesh Medical University as full-time UGC members.
They have been appointed for four-year terms under the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh Order, 1973, as amended.
However, the notification said the government reserved the right to relieve them of their duties before the expiry of their terms if deemed necessary.
