Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Saturday expressed hope that the UAE government will soon return former inspector general of police Benazir Ahmed.

He said this after presenting awards to police members at the Secretariat in recognition of their commendable work in maintaining law and order.

The minister also said that the day after he informed Jatiya Sangsad about the documents related to Benazir, they were sent to the UAE government.

“I hope the country’s government will follow due process and return him very soon,” he said.

Benazir was arrested from a shopping mall in Dubai on 12 June on the basis of a red notice issued by Interpol in connection with a case filed by the Anti‑Corruption Commission (ACC).

He added, “Issuing alerts is our responsibility. We suspect that around 23 June, a banned political party will attempt unrest and instability. Police will perform their duties, so alerts have been issued nationwide. We do not consider it a political party; it is a mafia party.”

He further said police failures are often highlighted, but their successes are not.

From the beginning, the government has aimed to be strict on punishing wrongdoers and rewarding the righteous. “That is why there is a punishment‑award policy. Those who remain inactive, neglect duties, or engage in corruption will be brought under punishment,” he added.

Referring to rewarding police for inspiration, the minister said, “We want to recognise those who perform their duties at risk to their lives. There was a perception that the police force had become inactive. But after 5 August, the force quickly regained moral courage.”

Since the elected government came, they have become much more active, performing duties at risk to their lives and this is notable, he said adding that such achievements deserve respect. “The government is encouraging them so that others are inspired and the law‑and‑order situation improves further.”

He also said, “Mohammadpur has long been a haven for criminals, which cannot be eradicated overnight. However, some plans have been taken. Gradually, criminals there will be eliminated and crime brought under control.”
