Two veteran politicians have returned to the cabinet after a hiatus of three and a half decades. They stand as the most senior figures to take on responsibilities as ministers and state ministers in the newly formed cabinet led by Tarique Rahman.

The two veterans are BNP Vice Chairman Nitai Roy Chowdhury and Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaikobad.

Nitai Roy Chowdhury previously served in the Ershad government in 1990, first as a state minister and subsequently as a minister.

He joined the BNP several years after the fall of the Ershad regime. In the recently concluded parliamentary elections, he was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Magura-2 constituency as a BNP candidate.

Similarly, Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaikobad served as a state minister in the Ershad government in 1990. He was later elected as an MP representing the Jatiya Party in the 1996 elections.

Following this, he joined the BNP and was elected to parliament in 2001. In the latest elections, he has been elected as an MP from the Cumilla-3 constituency.
