In the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) election, two students from minority communities have been elected to the executive member positions out of 28 posts.
Among the elected are Hema Chakma, a student from the 2020-21 academic year at the Institute of Health Economics, and Sorbo Mitra Chakma, a student from the 2022-23 academic year in the Department of Sociology.
Hema Chakma contested from the left-leaning student organisations’ alliance “Protirodh Porshad” panel and was elected as an executive member with 4,908 votes. Her home is in Panchhari Upazila, Khagrachhari.
During the election campaign, she faced criticism over allegations of involvement with Chhatra League. There are claims that she was the cultural assistant secretary of the organisation’s Institute of Health Economics branch.
Sorbo Mitra Chakma won the executive member position with 8,998 votes, running as a candidate from the Islami Chhatra Shibir-supported “United Student Alliance” panel. His home is in Rangamati Sadar Upazila.
