A tribunal in Sylhet on Wednesday sentenced two men to death for the gang-rape of a 14-year-old girl in Sylhet that occurred over a decade ago.
Judge Rubaiya Yasmin of the Sylhet Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal delivered the verdict in the presence of the accused.
The convicts were identified as Zainal Abedin, 25, and Nazim Uddin, 25, both residents of Bishwanath upazila.
The court’s decision was confirmed by Advocate Nur Ahmed, assistant public prosecutor (APP) of the Sylhet Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal.
According to the case proceedings, the incident took place on the afternoon of 27 November, 2012.
The victim was on her way to her grandfather’s house when Zainal Abedin intercepted her and forcibly took her to a nearby residence. There, Zainal and his accomplice, Nazim Uddin, violated the teenager.
Following the assault, the victim managed to use a mobile phone to informed her mother after Zainal left the premises.
Her mother rescued her from the scene and admitted her to the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital the following day, where she received treatment for four days.
A case was subsequently filed with the Bishwanath Police Station on 1 December, 2012.
