Two killed by lightning strikes in Narail

Two people were killed in separate lightning strikes in Lohagara upazila of Narail on Saturday evening, police said.

The deceased were identified as Titul Khan, 45, a farmer from Shalnagar village, and Babul Biswas, 40, from Matingar village in Noldi Union.

The incidents occurred around 5pm when sudden thunderstorms accompanied by lightning struck the area.

Local sources said Titul Khan had gone to a field near his home to give water to his cows when the sky suddenly turned overcast. A lightning bolt struck him, killing him instantly.

In a separate incident at roughly the same time, Babul Biswas and a companion named Shahid went fishing in the local Ichamati water body. Babul was seriously injured when lightning struck while they were fishing.

Shahid informed locals, who rushed Babul to Narail District Hospital. The doctor on duty in the emergency department declared him dead upon arrival.

Ajit Kumar Roy, Inspector (Investigation) of Lohagara Police Station, confirmed receiving reports of the two deaths.

“I have been informed of the deaths of two people in separate lightning strikes,” he said.

Both victims were residents of Lohagara upazila. Titul Khan was the son of Motiar Khan, and Babul Biswas was the son of Billal Biswas, according to local sources.

No other injuries were reported from the two locations.

Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious during inclement weather and avoid open fields and water bodies during thunderstorms.
