Even one day after the murder of Jagannath University (JnU) student Md Jobayed Hossain, no case has been filed yet. After the autopsy, family members have taken the body for burial.

Police have already taken two individuals into custody as accused in this incident. However, another person is being sought. Police officials are not disclosing any information regarding the two individuals in custody: Student Barsha and Md Mahir Rahman.

However, several police members have stated that Mahir’s friend Nafis is being searched for.

On Monday evening, DC (Lalbagh Zone) Mallik Ahsan Uddin Sami told TIMES of Bangladesh, “Family members have informed that they will return to Dhaka after burying the body in Comilla and then file the case. The female student was taken into custody immediately after the incident, and other family members have also been placed on the list of suspects.”

“Furthermore, by reviewing CCTV footage, we have identified two individuals. It cannot be confirmed yet exactly how many have been detained.”

However, a member of the Bangshal Police Station informed that on Monday dawn, Mahir’s mother herself brought her son to the Bangshal Police Station and handed Mahir over to the police.

The elder brother of the deceased Jobayed, Enayet Hossain Saikat, said, “We wanted to file a case naming five individuals as accused: student Barsha, her parents, Barsha’s lover Mahir Rahman, and Mahir’s friend Nafis. But the OC of Bongshal Police Station refused to accept the case.”

However, Bongshal Police Station OC Rafiqul Islam said that if a written complaint is received, a case will be recorded. He also informed that efforts are underway to identify and arrest those involved and that the investigation is ongoing.

Prior to this, on Sunday afternoon, Jobayed Hossain, a student of the 2019-20 session in the Statistics Department and a member of the JnU Chhatra Dal convening committee, was murdered while going to a tutoring session in Armanitola, Dhaka.

The blood-stained body was recovered from the stairs of a house named “Raushan Villa” in Armanitola’s Pani Pump Goli. At that time, two young men were seen fleeing in CCTV footage, but their faces are not clear.

Jobayed had been teaching Barsha Physics, Chemistry, and Biology at that house for the past year. After the incident, Barsha was taken into police custody for questioning. After lengthy interrogation, at around 11pm on Sunday, she was taken from her home to the police station.

In protest of this murder, JnU students staged a sit-in in front of the Bongshal Police Station, demanding the immediate arrest of the accused. They blocked the Tantibazar intersection, held protests, and also set some tyes on fire.

In memory of the deceased, Jagannath University authorities have declared two days of mourning. Simultaneously, all scheduled programmes for the University Day on October 22 have been suspended.
