Police have arrested two alleged associates of listed criminal David Emon with a foreign-made pistol and four rounds of ammunition in Chattogram city’s Bayezid Bostami area.
The arrestees were identified as Md Asif, 25, and Saidul Islam, alias Arif, 24, police said at a press conference at the Chattogram Metropolitan Police Media Centre on Monday.
Bayezid Bostami Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Karim said an examination of the suspects’ mobile phones found evidence of communication with David Emon over alleged extortion.
Police would seek their remand for further questioning to obtain detailed information, he said.
Police said a team led by Sub-Inspector Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury arrested the two after a chase near Wazedia playground on the Oxygen-Kuaiash road during an anti-arms and anti-narcotics drive on Saturday night.
During a search, police allegedly recovered a loaded foreign-made pistol from Asif and two additional rounds of ammunition from Saidul’s pocket. They could not produce any valid documents for the firearm, police said.
During primary questioning, the two admitted to being associates of David Emon and engaging in extortion and other criminal activities in different parts of the city and district, according to police.
A case was filed against them with Bayezid Bostami Police Station under the Arms Act.
Police said Asif was accused in 11 cases involving preparation for robbery, extortion, rioting, arms offences and attempted murder. Saidul was accused in two extortion cases.
