Two people, including the son-in-law, have been detained in connection with the killing of BNP leader Alamgir Hossain in Jashore, police said on Sunday.
Alamgir Hossain, joint general secretary of BNP Ward 7 unit of Jashore municipality, was shot dead on Saturday evening in what police described as a targeted attack resembling the recent shooting of Hadi in Dhaka.
The incident took place around 7pm on Ishaq Road in the Shankarpur area of the town.
According to police and eyewitness accounts, Alamgir was travelling on a motorcycle when assailants riding another motorcycle came from behind and shot him in the head before fleeing the scene.
District Detective Branch police later took two individuals into custody. One of them was identified as Basit Ali Parash, 29, the victim’s son-in-law, while the other was BNP leader Asabul Islam Sagar, 50.
Jashore Superintendent of Police Syed Rafiqul Islam confirmed the detentions during a press briefing at his office on Monday afternoon. He said preliminary investigation suggested the murder was orchestrated due to a family dispute.
“The son-in-law Parash allegedly arranged the killing by hiring contract killers following prolonged family conflict,” the police superintendent said. He added that Sagar joined the planning due to a prior personal enmity with the victim.
CCTV footage circulating on social media shows Alamgir riding his motorcycle when another bike carrying armed men approaches from behind and fires at him while in motion. Police said four helmeted individuals were seen riding two motorcycles during the attack. The main shooter and his accomplices have yet to be identified.
Syed Rafiqul Islam said the two suspects were detained based on complaints filed by family members. “Police operations are continuing to arrest the shooter and others involved in the crime,” he said.
Family members of the deceased said Alamgir had long-standing disputes with his son-in-law. They claimed Parash had issued death threats several months before the killing.
The victim’s wife Shamima Begum alleged that Parash was motivated by greed and had subjected their daughter to abuse over land-related issues. “He arranged my husband’s murder through hired killers. I want the highest punishment for those responsible,” she said.
Alamgir’s daughter Elora Khatun said she had faced physical and mental abuse since her marriage. She claimed her husband frequently threatened to kill her father unless property was transferred in his name. “He even told me he had bought a pistol to deal with his enemies,” she said, demanding capital punishment for all those involved, including her husband if found guilty.
Responding to the allegations, Parash’s father Advocate Zulfikar Ali Zulu, a member of the city BNP, said his son had been married to Alamgir’s daughter for around 10 years and that the couple had faced marital unrest since early on. He said several arbitration attempts had been made in the past. “If my son’s involvement in the murder is proven, he must face justice under the law,” he said.
Police said further investigation was underway to identify and arrest the remaining suspects involved in the killing.
