Two people were killed after a lentil-laden truck lost control, broke through a bridge railing and fell into a river in Shailkupa Upazila of Jhenaidah early Sunday.
The accident occurred around 1am on the Jhenaidah–Kushtia highway at the old Bardah Bridge in the Garaganj area.
The deceased were identified as truck driver Sohel Sheikh, 27, son of Abul Kalam Sheikh, and helper Mubarak Hossain, 20, son of Jafar Mia. Both were residents of Gazamanikunda village under Pabna Sadar Upazila.
Abdus Salam, assistant director of the Jashore region fire service, said the truck was travelling from Jashore to Pabna carrying lentils when it reached the old bridge at Garaganj. The vehicle reportedly lost control, smashed through the bridge railing and plunged into the Kumar River below.
Following the incident, two fire service units from Shailkupa and Jhenaidah launched rescue operations. Mubarak Hossain’s body was recovered at dawn, while the body of driver Sohel Sheikh was retrieved around 8am.
After receiving news of the accident, Jhenaidah Deputy Commissioner Abdullah Al Masud visited the site to inspect the situation.
The incident has once again raised concerns over road safety on old bridges along regional highways, particularly during night-time travel.
