Two brothers drowned after going for a bath in a pond at their home in Faridganj upazila of Chandpur on Sunday noon.
The deceased were identified as Yasin, 8, and Russel, 6, the only children of Abul Bashar and Shahina Begum from Kutubpur village in Rupsa North Union.
According to Zahirul Islam, the acting chairman of the local Union Parishad, the siblings were students at a local Hafezia Madrasa. Upon returning home from the madrasa at noon, they went to the pond to bathe while their mother was occupied with household chores. When they failed to return, the family began a search and eventually discovered the bodies of the two brothers floating in the water. Relatives subsequently recovered the bodies from the pond.
The incident has cast a shadow of intense grief over the family and the entire village.
Muzammel Hossain, the Residential Medical Officer (RMO) of Faridganj Upazila Health Complex, commented that the current extreme heat often leads children who cannot swim to enter ponds or ditches to cool down, resulting in such accidents.
He emphasised that parents and family members must remain vigilant and monitor their children’s movements to avoid such tragedies.
Mohammad Helal Uddin, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Faridganj Police Station, confirmed that the police are aware of the matter.
However, he noted that no formal complaint has been lodged by the family regarding the incident.
