Two candidates have been permanently banned from appearing in any future Bangladesh Bar Council examinations for committing fraud during the enrolment process.
The individuals facing the lifetime ban are Muhammad Saiful Amin of Lakshmipur Sadar Upazila and MR Akash of Sirajganj Sadar Upazila.
The decision was unanimously reached during a meeting of the Bar Council’s Enrolment Committee on 13 August. A notification confirming the matter, signed by the Bar Council Secretary Mohammad Kamal Hossain Shikder, was issued on Tuesday.
According to the notification, the allegations of fraud are linked to the written enrolment examination held on 28 June last year.
It was discovered that one of the candidates was absent from the examination, while the other attended but submitted a completely blank answer script. Despite these facts, both candidates subsequently demanded a re-evaluation of their results.
Following the incident, both candidates were served with show-cause notices. Upon reviewing their responses, the Enrolment Committee deemed their explanations “unrealistic, whimsical, and by no means satisfactory”.
The committee observed that such actions constitute a conscious attempt to defraud the Bar Council. The notification further stated that allowing such individuals to be listed as advocates would risk undermining the public’s right to receive legal services.
The Enrolment Committee emphasised that these activities are inconsistent with the high values of the legal profession.
It noted that allowing individuals who attempt to enter the profession through fraudulent means would be detrimental to the dignity of the legal arena and the public’s right to justice.
Consequently, the two candidates have been declared permanently ineligible for the advocate enrolment examination. The committee also stated that this strict measure was necessary to send a stern message to other examinees to deter them from engaging in similar conduct in the future.
