A 15-year-old schoolgirl was kidnapped and gang-raped by a group of armed miscreants in the early hours of Thursday in Sadarpur Upazila of Faridpur.
Local residents detained two suspects along with a motorcycle and handed them over to the police following the incident. The victim, an eighth-grade student, is currently undergoing treatment in the gynaecology ward of Faridpur Medical College Hospital.
The incident occurred at approximately 1am in a village within Bhasanchar Union. The victim’s uncle reported that he and the girl’s mother were away at a hospital for her grandmother’s eye surgery at the time, leaving the girl at home with her younger brother and sister.
According to family members, an armed group of 10 to 15 men surrounded the house and demanded that the door be opened. When the family refused, the attackers broke a window and forcibly dragged the girl out. The victim’s younger sister stated that the assailants entered through the window and pulled her sister out by her hair.
The group reportedly created panic in the area by threatening neighbours who attempted to intervene. The girl was then taken on a motorcycle to the bank of a pond in a neighbouring village, where three youths gang-raped her.
At around 3am, as the victim became seriously ill, the attackers attempted to flee after leaving her near her home. Local residents gave chase and caught two of the suspects, identified as Helal Mridha (20), and Rais Shikdar (16). The two were handed over to Sadarpur Police after receiving a mob beating.
The victim’s mother expressed her shock upon returning from the hospital, stating she was “speechless” at her daughter’s condition.
Shamsul Azam, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Ops) in Faridpur, confirmed that a written complaint has been received. “We are investigating the incident with the highest priority and taking legal action,” he said, adding that the two suspects are currently in police custody.
