Police have arrested five suspects over alleged involvement in the murder of Tariq Saif Mamun in Old Dhaka. Two of the arrested individuals are named Rubel and Ibrahim. Detective Police have stated that both of them worked as professional shooters.
They were arrested on Tuesday evening during raids conducted in various locations of Comilla, led by an Additional Deputy Commissioner of the Lalbagh Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective (DB) Police. Two pistols were also confiscated during these drives.
Joint Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan DB Police, Mohammad Nasirul Islam, told TIMES of Bangladesh that the operation and investigation are still ongoing, and details will be provided later.
Detective officials informed that after the murder, Rubel and Ibrahim were trying to flee by crossing the border. Preliminary interrogation has revealed that they have admitted their involvement in the murder.
Earlier, on Monday afternoon, Tariq Saif Mamun was shot dead in broad daylight in the Sutrapur area of Old Dhaka. According to family members, on his way back home to Aftabnagar in Dhaka after appearing in court for an old case, miscreants targeted and shot Mamun. He died on the spot.
In-charge of the Dhaka Medical College (DMCH) Hospital Police Outpost, Md Faruq, said, “Mamun was brought to DMCH with gunshot wounds after 12pm, where doctors declared him dead. The body was later sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy.”
According to the police, the deceased Mamun was a listed top terrorist and one of the main leaders of the “Emon-Mamun Group”. He was once a close associate of another top terrorist, Sanjidul Islam Emon. There had been a long-standing feud between them over control of the criminal underworld.
Deputy Commissioner of the Lalbagh Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Mallik Ahsan Sami, said, “The deceased Mamun is the Mamun of that ‘Emon-Mamun’ Group. His name was in police records as a top terrorist.”
