Police arrested two individuals in separate incidents in Sunamganj and Dhaka on charges of sexually harassing two five-year-old children on Saturday, following emergency calls made to National Emergency Service 999.
In the first incident, a call was placed to 999 at 9:08pm on Saturday, from Syedpur Ishankona in Jagannathpur, Sunamganj. The caller, the victim’s uncle, reported that his five-year-old niece had been subjected to an attempted sexual assault.
The child was reportedly touched inappropriately by a distant uncle while she was playing at home during her parents’ absence. Hearing her screams, neighbours and her parents rushed to the scene and rescued her.
Constable Joy Biswas received the call at 999 control room, while ASI Sirajul Islam served as the police dispatcher, maintaining constant communication with the caller and local police station.
A team from Jagannathpur Police Station subsequently arrested 40-year-old Sabbir Mia at the scene. The victim’s father has filed a case regarding the matter.
In a second incident only two minutes later, at 9:10pm, another call was received by 999 from Niribili Falguni Housing area in Ashulia, Dhaka. A grandparent reported that their five-year-old granddaughter had been targeted.
The incident occurred when the child went outside a rented house belonging to Enamul during a power outage. An individual reportedly touched her inappropriately, but locals rescued the girl after hearing her cries for help.
This call was handled by 999 call-taker Constable Maliha Akter, with ASI Sirajul Islam again acting as the police dispatcher. Ashulia police responded to the location and arrested 31-year-old Md Selim.
Selim is originally from Dighirchar in Jamalpur Sadar but was residing near Aktel Tower in Ashulia. The victim’s mother has initiated legal proceedings by filing a case.
