US President Donald Trump has suggested that UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer might consider using the military to combat illegal migration across the English Channel.
During a joint press conference at Chequers, Trump emphasized his firm stance on border security, recounting discussions with Starmer about the rising issue of migrants crossing into the UK, reports agencies.
Despite warm diplomacy and an agreement on science and tech, key points such as US tariffs on UK steel and the UK’s stance on Palestinian statehood were left unresolved. Trump, however, expressed gratitude for the UK’s hospitality, particularly during a memorable ceremonial farewell by the Royal Family.
“You have people coming in, and I told the Prime Minister I would stop it, and it doesn’t matter if you call out the military, it doesn’t matter what means you use,” Trump said.
Trump also underscored the critical impact of illegal immigration, claiming that it “destroys countries from within,” an issue he has prioritized since returning to the White House, with heightened deportations and stronger border enforcement.
During the two-day visit, Trump, accompanied by First Lady Melania, was hosted by the Royal Family at Windsor Castle and attended a state banquet. A new technology partnership was announced between the US and the UK, aiming to enhance collaboration in AI, quantum computing, and other sectors.
Trump’s visit concluded with a minor incident as his helicopter had to make an unscheduled stop before heading back to the US. The trip, though marked by pageantry, highlighted the ongoing political differences between the two countries on major global issues.
