Home Affairs Adviser Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Sunday said members of law enforcement agencies will be deployed across the country from Wednesday to ensure peaceful celebrations of Durga Puja.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting of the Advisory Council on Law and Order at the Secretariat, he said the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs will also appoint 80,000 volunteers during the festival to strengthen vigilance.
The adviser noted that incidents of idol vandalism have significantly declined this year, adding that those responsible are being identified through CCTV footage.
On smuggling, he said narcotics are entering the country through multiple routes, while items such as rice, fertiliser, and medicines are also being smuggled out. Smuggling is not limited to Cox’s Bazar and Chattogram but continues via river routes in Barishal and Barguna, he added.
Large quantities of drugs have been seized, the adviser said, noting that the Arakan Army survives largely on the drug trade.
