US President Donald Trump has described it as “ridiculous” for the United States to maintain its current level of support for NATO, renewing criticism of what he called a “one-sided” relationship with the alliance.
In a post on his Truth Social platform on Thursday, Trump said the arrangement was “not reciprocal”, adding: “They were not there for us!!!”, reports AFP.
His comments come less than a week before a NATO summit scheduled to take place in Ankara, where alliance commitments and burden-sharing are expected to feature prominently on the agenda.
Trump has repeatedly criticised European allies in recent months, particularly over their responses to the ongoing war involving Iran, arguing that the United States shoulders a disproportionate share of NATO responsibilities.
