US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that Iran has 48 hours to agree to opening the Strait of Hormuz or face severe consequences.

“Remember when I gave Iran ten days to make a deal or open up the Hormuz Strait,” he wrote on Truth Social.

“Time is running out 48 hours before all hell will rain down on them,” he said, adding, “Glory be to God!”

Trump had earlier warned on 21 March that he would “obliterate” Iran’s power plants, starting with the largest, if Tehran failed to fully open the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours, reports AFP/BSS.

Two days later, he said “very good and productive conversations” were taking place with Iranian authorities and delayed potential strikes for five days.

He later extended the deadline again, setting it to expire at 8pm Monday (0000 GMT Tuesday).

Experts have warned that attacks on civilian energy infrastructure could amount to a war crime.
