A Dhaka court has banned former Managing Director of Rupali Bank PLC Obayed Ullah Al Masud, along with his wife and children, from leaving the country over allegations of corruption.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Sabbir Faiz issued the order on Wednesday following an application by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The court order also imposes a travel ban on Obayed Ullah’s wife Marzina Begum, also known as Munmun Masud, his sons Junaid Zulkarnain Nayan Vian and Zunun Safwan, and his daughter Tasmiya Taralgun Naomi.
On the same day, the court also barred Alliant Energy Solution (BD) Limited Managing Director Kazi Hasan Sharif from leaving the country, over allegations of laundering Tk2,000 crore.
Earlier, ACC Assistant Director Md Nazmul Islam filed a petition seeking a travel ban on Obayed Ullah Al Masud and his family.
The application stated that during his tenure as Managing Director of Rupali Bank PLC, Obayed Ullah Al Masud approved bank loans and used the funds for personal purposes, particularly to finance his son’s overseas education.
It further alleged that bank accounts linked to him received cash deposits from third parties, accepted funds from unknown sources through clearing channels and transferred money to business-inactive entities, which are linked to money laundering.
The petition also said that since two of his children have already left the country, there is concern that he and other family members may also leave. Therefore, a travel ban is required to ensure a proper investigation.
On the same day, ACC Assistant Director Md Ashikur Rahman submitted another petition seeking a travel ban on the other accused Hasan Sharif.
The application stated that allegations of illegally transferring around Tk2,000 crore abroad against Kazi Hasan are currently under investigation.
According to reliable sources, there is a risk that the accused may flee the country. Therefore, restricting his foreign travel is necessary for a fair investigation.
