A court in Dhaka has imposed travel restrictions on seven businessmen, including Sheikh Sajed Ali, chairman of Royal Inspection International Ltd, over graft allegations.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Foyez approved the travel ban on Wednesday following a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), court sources said.
Others barred from travelling abroad include Syed Mohammad Abdul Hai, proprietor of Legend Holdings; M Kamal Hossain; Mohammad Zahirul Haque; Md Bazlur Rashid Khan; Safiur Rahman; and Khondoker Robiul Haque, director of Commodity Inspection Services (BD) Ltd.
In its petition, the ACC said the travel ban was necessary to protect the ongoing investigations and ensure the smooth conduct of the judicial process. It added that the restriction would prevent the accused from influencing the investigation or absconding.
The ACC also noted that if the need arises in future investigations, investigating officers may file similar petitions to restrict travel for other accused individuals.
