The local administration has temporarily banned the tour event group “Trail of Heaven” from operating in Thanchi Upazila for allegedly defying official instructions by taking tourists into risky border areas.
The decision was formally announced in a letter issued on Monday, signed by the Thanchi Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Abdullah Al Faisal.
According to the letter, the tour group was detained while heading towards the Baklai army camp near the border with 10 to 12 tourists. The group had already crossed the Tomatungi tourism centre when they were intercepted.
Current security protocols dictate that tourists travelling by road are only permitted to travel as far as Tomatungi. Consequently, in the interest of the safety of visitors to Thanchi, the administration has suspended all events organised by Trail of Heaven within the upazila.
Repeated attempts to contact Niaz Arefin of the Trail of Heaven tour operator group for comment were unsuccessful, as his mobile phone remained switched off.
