The Thanchi Upazila administration has imposed a temporary ban on travel to tourist destinations along river and hilly routes due to adverse weather, continuous rainfall, rising water levels in the Sangu River, and the risk of landslides.
Thanchi Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Abdullah Al Faisal informed local journalists on Monday, that the restriction has been imposed as a precautionary measure. He said the decision is temporary and tourists will be allowed to visit all areas once weather conditions improve and normalcy returns.
Transport disrupted by rising river currents
Heavy rainfall upstream has significantly increased the flow and current of the Sangu River, forcing authorities to suspend engine-powered boat services since Monday morning.
As a result, residents of Tindu and Remakri unions have been unable to travel to the upazila headquarters. Tindu Union Parishad Chairman Bhagya Chandra Tripura said he was currently stranded at the headquarters and would return home only once river conditions stabilise.
Landslide briefly disrupts road communication
Meanwhile, continuous rainfall triggered a landslide along the Bandarban–Thanchi road in the Nilgiri area. Fire Service personnel quickly cleared the debris, restoring vehicular movement on the route.
Authorities said they are closely monitoring the situation as rainfall continues in the hilly region.
