Bandarban hill district administration has decided not to reopen the Keokradong tourism center for tourists from Wednesday, following ongoing unrest in two hill districts. This decision comes amid an indefinite road blockade in Khagrachhari and Rangamati, which has escalated tensions in the region.
However, the administration has not officially given any reason regarding this. It is assumed that this decision was made in light of the prevailing situation related to the incidents in Khagrachhari.
On Saturday afternoon, Deputy Commissioner Shamim Ara Rini announced the suspension of the reopening decision.
An official of the Bandarban district administration stated that although a quality paved road has been constructed from Boga Lake, the Keokradong peak remains a remote area. There are no proper housing or food facilities developed there. Considering this, the overall situation will be reviewed with all stakeholders, and a new date will be announced very soon.
He also mentioned that the date was postponed to ensure adequate security arrangements and other necessary facilities for tourists.
Deputy Commissioner Shamim Ara Rini said that the overall situation in the hill region is being monitored. For this reason, the decision to lift the travel ban on Keokradong on Wednesday has been suspended. A decision will be made later after reviewing the overall situation again.
The indefinite road blockade was called on Sunday night in protest against the killing of three hill people and arson attacks on hill people’s homes during violence in the road blockade program in Khagrachhari demanding justice for the rape of a school student.
The administration imposed the temporary restriction on visitors in Ruma and Rowangchhari upazilas on 18 October.
Later, on 23 October, the local administration discouraged tourists from traveling to Thanchi and Alikadam upazilas due to the same reason.
However, The ban was lifted step by step in several areas. Meanwhile, on 11 February this year, Devtakum in Rowangchhari was reopened for tourists.
