Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the permanent signing of forward Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich, marking the first official acquisition under new head coach Thomas Frank.
The 20-year-old Frenchman has signed a six-year deal that will keep him at the club until 2031, following a successful loan spell in North London. Spurs are believed to have paid around £30 million for Tel, who initially joined on loan in February.
During his time on loan, Tel made 20 appearances across all competitions and found the net three times. While he was an unused substitute in Spurs’ Europa League final victory over Manchester United, his performances impressed enough to trigger the club’s option to buy.
In a statement released by the club, Tottenham said: “We are delighted to announce the permanent signing of Mathys Tel from FC Bayern. Mathys joined the Club from the Bundesliga side in February on loan until the end of the season with an option to make the move permanent. We can confirm we have agreed a deal with Bayern that will see the France Under-21 international sign a contract that will run until 2031 when his current loan deal ends on June 30.”
Tel is currently on international duty with France at the European Under-21 Championship.
Tottenham are expected to be active in the summer transfer market as they back Frank in his first window in charge. The club are targeting further reinforcements, with Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo high on their list. Mbeumo, who is valued at around £60 million, is also attracting interest from Manchester United.
Spurs have additionally been linked with Mbeumo’s Brentford teammates Yoane Wissa and Christian Norgaard as Frank looks to reshape the squad ahead of the new season.
