BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has alleged that the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is not working actively, which has resulted in corrupt individuals not being punished properly. Referring to the commission as a “toothless” institution, he also raised questions about its activities.
Rizvi raised these questions while speaking to journalists on Wednesday afternoon after placing a wreath at the grave of BNP’s founder, former president Ziaur Rahman, in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
He said, “Newspapers are reporting that many people have embezzled public money and built houses in New York, London, Dubai, Ottawa in Canada, and Sydney in Australia. Starting from the niece and relatives of the former prime minister to ministers of the Awami League, news has been received that some have assets worth Tk602 crore, including flats and houses. Furthermore, the court has specifically ordered the ACC to recover Tk24,824 crore. So far, this commission has failed to recover that embezzled money. It has failed to punish the accomplices of the fascists. Exemplary punishment is not being meted out to those who have fled after embezzling bank money.”
Rizvi added, “When Hasina is not there, when there is no Awami League police, no Chhatra League, no helmet-wearing cadres, then why have abduction incidents nearly doubled in this one year? Why would the law-and-order situation deteriorate? The people want to know.”
He said, “Even though the people and political parties have confidence in the interim government, the government is unable to take steps with efficiency and speed. Because of this, ghosts of the accomplices are getting the opportunity to take to the streets in various places.”
Strongly condemning and protesting the incident of Awami League harassing political leaders who accompanied the chief adviser to the UN General Assembly session in New York, he said, “If the interim government had demonstrated efficiency, the accomplices of fascism would not have dared to carry out such activities on foreign soil.”
Urging BNP leaders and workers to work unitedly for the upcoming elections “so that the fascists cannot return,” Rizvi went on: “We have no understanding with the Awami League, which killed people, killed students and children, to cling to power. Everyone must be cautious and vigilant.”
On Tuesday afternoon, led by Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, party leaders and workers placed a wreath at Zia’s grave in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar to pay respects. The delegation included the newly appointed convenor of Patuakhali district BNP, Nazrul Islam Khan, member secretary Saidul Islam Kismat, first joint convenor Eliza Zaman, convenor of Barguna district BNP Nazrul Islam Molla, member secretary Humayun Hasan Shahi, joint convenor Fazlul Haque Master, and others.
