Police have identified a family dispute over marriage as the suspected reason behind the killing of a father and son in Tongi, Gazipur.
Investigation sources said the elder brother killed his father and younger brother after a conflict over the younger brother’s wish to marry a female cousin who was about ten years older than him.
Police confirmed on Monday that questioning of the accused revealed that the incident is not linked to drugs, as was initially suspected.
Earlier on Sunday morning, police recovered two bodies from separate locations in the Bonmala area of Tongi. The victims were identified as Md Sohel, 48 and his son Sakibur Rahman Shoaib, 17. Both lived in the Bonmala Primary School Road area of North Dattapara, Tongi.
The accused, Sairfur Rahman Sohan, 27, the elder son of the deceased Sohel, has been detained.
Shoaib was an eleventh-grade student at a college in Uttara and also worked part-time at a shop named Bengal Food in Tejgaon.
Sohan worked at a pharmaceutical factory.
Investigation sources said Shoaib wanted to marry his cousin, who was around ten years older than him. The elder brother strongly opposed the relationship. A serious dispute developed between the two brothers over the issue, which later involved their father.
According to investigators, Sohan first tied up his younger brother Shoaib, stuffed his mouth with cloth, and slit the tendons of his hands and feet, killing him.
He then took his father to a railway track and left him there, where the father died after being hit by a train.
To mislead relatives, Sohan reportedly claimed over the phone that his father had killed the younger son over drug money and later died by suicide after jumping in front of a train.
Following the incident, police recovered both bodies and detained Sohan for questioning.
Later, the victim’s aunt Shirin Sultana filed a murder case against unidentified persons.
Police said the accused will be shown arrested in the case and produced before court.
Officials also said he is expected to give a confessional statement.
Tongi East Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Md Zillur Rahman said “The case appears to be linked to a domestic dispute over a relationship.”
He added “After killing his brother, the accused was able to take his father to the railway track, taking advantage of his condition.”
He also said police expect to formally brief the media after the accused’s confession in court.
Earlier, police reports said both bodies were found with injury marks and sent to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Initial findings suggested the deaths were unclear, and investigation was ongoing before the latest breakthrough.
