The jet engines are preparing to roar once more as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell returns to the cockpit. After months of speculation, Paramount Pictures has officially confirmed ‘Top Gun 3’ at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. Jerry Bruckheimer will return as producer alongside Tom Cruise, who, at 63, is preparing to take to the skies once again.
Few characters in Hollywood have transcended the screen quite like Maverick. First introduced in Top Gun, directed by Tony Scott, the role became emblematic of an era, blending aerial combat with themes of rivalry, courage and self-discovery. The film left a lasting imprint on 1980s popular culture.
The long-awaited sequel, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, arrived 36 years later under the direction of Joseph Kosinski and went on to gross nearly $1.5 billion worldwide. It marked the first time in Cruise’s career that a film surpassed the $1 billion milestone and was widely credited with revitalising cinemas in the aftermath of the pandemic. Filmmaker Steven Spielberg notably praised Cruise for helping to restore confidence in the theatrical experience.
Speaking at CinemaCon, Paramount co-head Josh Greenstein confirmed that Top Gun 3 is now in active development, with the script progressing quickly. Although Cruise did not attend in person, he appeared in a pre-recorded message filmed atop the studio’s iconic water tower, saying, “The future looks pretty bright from here,” further fuelling anticipation.
Story details remain under wraps, though Christopher McQuarrie has previously indicated that the foundation for the third instalment is already in place. He is joined by co-writer Ehren Kruger.
The director and release date have yet to be announced, but expectations are high for a continuation that balances spectacle with emotional depth.
There is, however, a poignant absence. Val Kilmer delivered a memorable final performance as Tom ‘Iceman’ Kazansky in Top Gun: Maverick. His death in April 2025 leaves a significant void, and how the film will address his absence remains an open question.
