A Dhaka court has granted bail to two suspects in the brutal “lynching” of Tofazzal Hossain at a Dhaka University hall following their surrender to the court.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain passed the order for Abu Raihan and Redwanur Rahman Parvez, both students of applied chemistry at the university.
After a hearing, the court granted them bail until the next scheduled date of the case.
The development was confirmed by State Prosecutor Md Harun-or-Rashid.
According to court sources, the accused applied for bail through their lawyer upon surrendering. Lawyer Mohammad Ali Babu represented the accused, while State Prosecutor Md Harun-or-Rashid opposed the bail request during the hearing.
The case statement reveals that on 18 September 2024, around 7:45pm, several students detained Tofazzal Hossain after observing him acting suspiciously near the gate of Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall. He was initially taken to the hall’s guest room and assaulted over suspicions of stealing a mobile phone.
The victim was later provided with a meal at the canteen as the students suspected he might be suffering from a mental illness.
However, according to the First Information Report (FIR), he was moved to the guest room in the south building, where his hands were tied to a window and he was subjected to further assault with stamps, hockey sticks, and sticks. This brutal assault ultimately led to his death.
The case is under ongoing investigation as authorities work to gather further details.
