Efforts are underway to bring to justice those behind the extortion threats sent to several embassies in the capital, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Detective Branch chief Shafiqul Islam has said.
Speaking on Sunday in response to a reporter’s question at the DMP Media Centre, the DMP DB additional commissioner revealed that three to four embassies and several government offices had received such threats.
Shafiqul added that these threats were sent out of hostility, as well as to tarnish the country’s image. He added that the primary objective was to scare the ambassadors stationed here, describing the campaign as a subversive, anti-state activity.
“We are working on this,” the DB chief said. “We have assured you that we treat any incident with gravity. We are optimistic that we will solve this as well, and bring those behind it to justice.”
Regarding the threats to the embassies, the detective official said they had brought in about three to four people for questioning in connection with the bKash numbers provided in the threat emails.
However, Shafiqul Islam noted that the individuals knew nothing about the threats. “They know nothing. The people associated with the bKash numbers provided in the emails are innocent; they know nothing,” he said.
