The violence broke out repeatedly from around 9am on Tuesday at Kalikachha Bazar, where residents of Surjakandi and Dhornoti villages engaged in fresh confrontations. At least 30 people were injured in the clashes, five of them in critical condition.
During the violence, several shops and houses were attacked, vandalised and looted, bringing traffic on the Sarail–Nasirnagar–Lakhai road to a complete halt.
Police and local sources said Surjakandi resident Mosharraf Mia claimed that Dhornoti villager Md Khadim owed him Tk1 lakh in interest. When Khadim refused to pay, tensions escalated and both sides clashed on Sunday night, leaving Khadim dead.
Fresh violence erupted again on Monday afternoon after Khadim’s funeral prayers, lasting nearly three hours and leaving at least 30 people injured, including Sarail Police Station Officer-in-Charge Manjur Kader Bhuiyan.
On Tuesday morning, the situation flared up again for the third day in a row, with both sides attacking each other using locally made weapons.
Sarail Police Station Officer-in-Charge Manjur Kader Bhuiyan said the clashes were continuing intermittently.
Assistant Superintendent of Police of Sarail–Ashuganj Circle Jahangir Alam said law enforcement agencies were working to bring the situation under control.
“We are making all-out efforts to stabilise the situation. We hope it will come fully under control very soon,” he added.
