One of the country’s most popular bands, ‘Chirkutt’, is now stepping into two distinct eras of its musical journey.
Formed under the leadership of lyricist, composer, music director and vocalist Sharmin Sultana Sumi, the band has contributed numerous well-known songs to the Bengali music landscape over the past two decades. Throughout this long journey, Chirkutt has received multiple awards and honours both at home and abroad.
The band began the new year with a live performance, opening its 2026 musical calendar with a concert in Sylhet on January 3. Shortly afterwards, on January 9, Chirkutt won the ‘Best Band’ award for the third time at the 25th Dhallywood Film and Music Awards, held in Dhaka.
The award was given for the song ‘Daami’ from Chirkutt’s 2025 album ‘Bhalobashashomogro’. All band members were present on stage to receive the honour. Sharing her reaction, Sharmin Sultana Sumi said, “This recognition for Daami, which we wrote and composed ourselves, has given us fresh inspiration as we move forward in this new phase. The love of our audience and the grace of the Creator are our greatest strength.”
She also expressed gratitude to everyone involved in the making of the album, including co-producer Zakir Ahmed and sound engineer Shuvo.
Looking ahead, Chirkutt is now concentrating on its fifth studio album. The band further plans to continue performing regularly at concerts both in Bangladesh and overseas. Preparations are also under way to mark Chirkutt’s 25th anniversary next year.
