Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy is launching regular ticketed film screenings, creating a new platform for independent filmmakers amid the country’s shortage of cinema halls.
As a pilot, three films will screen at the academy’s Theatre Hall on 15 August. Akash Haque’s The University of Chankharpul will screen at 3:30pm, Mohammad Nuruzzaman’s Mastul at 6pm and Mejbaur Rahman Sumon’s Roid at 8pm. Tickets will cost Tk100.
The initiative follows a strong response to the three-day Ekal Shekal film festival, where Roid, Mastul and The University of Chankharpul drew packed crowds and long queues.
Theatre and Film Department director Deepak Kumar Goswami said the academy plans weekly screenings before expanding the programme nationwide. He said the initiative could give independent filmmakers greater access to audiences.
