In an unusual twist to traditional wedding gifts, Ratul Hasan Safi, a groom from Rajapukur, Begunbari Union in Thakurgaon Sadar, was presented with five liters of octane during his wedding celebration.
While wedding gifts typically include items like bed linens, dinner sets, jewelry, or decorative pieces, this rare present reflects the current fuel scarcity affecting Bangladesh.
Following global disruptions in oil supply after tensions between Israel, the United States, and Iran, fuel availability has been limited nationwide, forcing citizens to queue for hours at filling stations. Thakurgaon has been no exception, with most stations reporting shortages.
Guests at the wedding remarked on the practicality of the gift. Hasan Raihan said, “In today’s situation, fuel has become one of the most valuable essentials. This gift is both unique and useful.” Another guest, Jamali, added, “It’s humorous, yet it mirrors the current energy crisis in the country.”
The gift-giver, local businessman Zahirul Islam, explained that the octane was given to ensure the newlyweds could travel comfortably amid fuel scarcity. “Petrol and octane are hard to find, and people face long waits. This gift is both practical for the couple and symbolic of the current situation,” he said.
Ratul Hasan Safi expressed his gratitude, noting that the gift, though unconventional, would be extremely helpful. “It’s a very unusual present, but in these times, it will certainly come in handy. I am grateful to the gift-givers,” he said.
