The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) prosecution on Sunday said that the ongoing testimonies in the case filed against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and two others over crimes against humanity committed during the July Mass Uprising may conclude by first week of October.
The two other defendants are former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun.
“We hope to complete recording the testimonies of the material witnesses in this case within September. It may extend to the first week of October,” prosecutor Mizanul Islam told reporters after the testimony of witnesses.
Four new prosecution witnesses testified in the case on Sunday. Later, they were cross-examined by the defence. With them, a total of nine prosecution witnesses have so far testified in the mass killing case.
The International Crimes Tribunal-1 had filed a probe report in the mass killing case ICT on May 12, following which the prosecution brought five charges against the three accused.
ICT-1 on July 10 indicted the three accused for their roles in committing crimes against humanity. Earlier, the Tribunal on June 17 published a notice in two national dailies asking them to surrender to the Tribunal on June 24.
“If the accused in the case don’t surrender on the day, trial will be held in absentia as per section 10A of the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act, 1973,” the notice read.
