A fresh clash broke out between students of Chittagong University (CU) and local residents near the university campus on Sunday noon, leaving at least 40 people including CU Pro Vice Chancellor Dr Mohammad Kamal Uddin and Proctor Tanvir Haydar Arif injured.
As tensions were mounting, the university authorities are trying to calm the situation with the help of law enforcers.
The fresh trouble took place as students blocked the CU main gate in protest against Saturday night’s clash.
The protesters chanted various slogans, demanding punishment for those involved in the violence.
At one stage of the protest, local people armed with sticks chased the students, leading to further clash.
During the period, the angry mob attacked CU students and faculty members.
Saturday night’s confrontation between the students and locals occurred around 11:30pm near the CU second gate.
The altercation started when a female student was beaten by a caretaker of building after attempting to enter her rented house, which led to the confrontation.
According to the CU administration, at least 40 people, including Al Mashnun, senior joint general secretary of Bangladesh Democratic Students Union (BAGCHAS) and CU branch’s general secretary, were injured in the violence.
Fifteen of the seriously injured have been admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
Dr Mohammad Kamal Uddin, pro-vice-chancellor (Administration) of the university, confirmed that many students were injured in the attack by locals.
Meanwhile, the university authorities have postponed all exams to quell the unrest.
The army and police personnel have been deployed in and around the spot to control the situation.
“We strongly condemn this attack by locals and will take immediate steps to identify the culprits and bring them to justice,” Kamal Uddin added.
